Lab 6: #Syria

The graphs within our group revealed that our topics were more related and similar than first anticipated. Obiously #Syria, #ISIS and #Muslimban are going to be related but the graphs reveal exactly how they are through social-networking analysis in a variety of ways. The graphs that tell the strongest stories, for all of us, are the Word Cloud and the Tweet Connections graph made with Gephy.  These expose the strongest relationships between the topics within my group.

Upon further investigation, there are actually many tweets that involve all three of our hashtags, #syria, #ISIS, and #muslimban.  This gives some insight as to why our graphs are so strongly related.  This is more than likely very similar for the rest of my group as we found upon comparison in class.  Another important connection is that our CartoDB graphs were extremely insignificant, they did not yield many data points making all of our hashtag topics all the more similar.

The WordCloud is what will give the most insight, and then the Twitter analysis–I will stick to those for the presentation.

  • Title of Presentation:
  • #Syria – hashtag topic.
    • Why is this issue important? Media Sources
    • Key Findings based on WordWeb – why does this tell the best story?
    • Key findings based on Tweet connection Analysis – why does this tell the best story?
    • What these findings mean in terms of TWO READINGS from Class
    • Summary/Conclusion
      • Overarching evidence! Something significant I’ve drawn through my many forms of Data analysis.

I concur with your conclusion that the world cloud and gephi graph told the strongest stories when it came to our data. I thought it was interesting that you found many tweets involving all three of our hashtags as I didn’t even think to look into that. I agree that this shows why our graphs are so strongly related. Overall I have enjoyed reading your labs throughout the semester and look forward to your presentation in class on Monday!

  2. The order is on point but I am entirely unclear as to what the actual argument is. Head to the Writing Center or see the TAs for more support. I am sure your ideas are clearer than specified here. Finally, do not forget to address a key reading or two from class to help amplify your arguments!

  3. Ian,
I agree with your choices for which graphs represent our data best in terms of a comparison. I thought it was cool to be able to look at these visualizations side by side and discuss how our results were similar and different. I think we all realized that our topics had a lot more in common with each other than we originally had thought. This definitely appeared to be the case when we searched for tweets that contained all three of our hashtag. I look forward to your presentation on Monday.
