Laverne Cox is an Emmy-Nominated actress who is also the first trans woman of color to have a leading role on a mainstream scripted television show. Cox is also a renowned speaker and takes her inspiring message to many different platforms all over the country (she actually gave an amazing motivational speech where I went to undergrad, Union College). With this I ask, although there have been famous transgender people in the past, what has Laverne Cox done through her role in “Orange is the New Black” and through use of other social media, to help push the transgender movement forward?

This topic is really interesting to me because I don’t think before OITNB and class discussions I had really known much at all about transgender people. I really find it fascinating that Laverne Cox’s role in OITNB has almost brought transgender people back into the limelight and I really want to look at why. I may even look at past famous transgender people (such as Christine Jorgenson) or present (such as Caitlyn Jenner) as another form of comparison. In my research paper I plan to really look at how the show “Orange is the New Black” coincides with the events of Cox’s real life. I want to take an inside look into who she was and how she came to be the star we see today. I plan on going through her story as well as examining how her role has impacted the LGBTQ community. By looking at trans portrayals in the media and celebrity roles in social movements I plan to look at her rise to fame as well as the role the show has had on her and her career. This paper will look at how race, gender, and sexuality intersect in the media. I will also look at and compare how different outlets of media reflect differently on her portrayal (for example how some pro/anti LGBTQ rights sites view her and her character on the show).

We have a ton of in class material that I plan to use including the transgender history reading by Susan Stryker as well as some selections from Maggie Nelson’s The Argonauts. I also plan to use the reading for the last class by Kate Bornstein. I will be looking at research done on trans portrayals in the media, LGBTQ in the media, and recent celebrity roles in social movements including Laverne Cox’s interview with TIME Magazine once she was selected to their cover. I am also interested in using some videos and documentary’s besides a couple of Orange is the New Black episodes such as PBS’s “Growing Up Trans”. I think being able to really get an inside look at the lives of other real people alongside academic articles and books will only aid this paper.

[zotpress collection=”8ISR5JIR” notes=”yes”]

Below Brittney’s topic proposal, you will find her complete annotated bibliography.
