Instead, they saw themselves &#8212; and the power of literature<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/writer\/bill_smoot\/\" rel=\"author\">Bill Smoot<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The opening of \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d describes Odysseus as <em>polytropos<\/em>, a man \u201cmuch turned\u201d and \u201cmuch turning.\u201d He makes much happen, and much happens to him. When I selected \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d as the first text for my English 101 course at San Quentin Prison, I worried about the choice. It\u2019s a difficult work for readers of limited literary background, and I wondered how a population of mostly black and brown men doing long prison terms would relate to the story of an ancient Greek king.
