This semester, spring 2019, Prof. Tomasso taught a intermediate\/advanced ancient Greek course about the ancient novel A True Story<\/em> (GREK 332) and its relationship to modern science fiction.<\/p>\n

On a sunny, warm afternoon in April, Prof. Tomasso and his students held class outside. ‘Neath the shady elms, they discussed Book 1 section 13 in which the narrator describes a decidedly odd contingent of the Moon King Endymion’s military forces: the \u1f08\u03bd\u03b5\u03bc\u03bf\u03b4\u03c1\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9.<\/p>\n

What exactly were these beings? Lucian’s narrator describes them as light-armed infantry who wore chitons down to their feet and flew by letting the wind fill these chitons (\u03c7\u03b9\u03c4\u1ff6\u03bd\u03b1\u03c2 \u03c0\u03bf\u03b4\u03ae\u03c1\u03b5\u03b9\u03c2 \u1f51\u03c0\u03b5\u03b6\u03c9\u03c3\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9 \u03ba\u03bf\u03bb\u03c0\u03ce\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2 \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2 \u03c4\u1ff7 \u1f00\u03bd\u03ad\u03bc\u1ff3 \u03ba\u03b1\u03b8\u03ac\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1 \u1f31\u03c3\u03c4\u03af\u03b1 \u03c6\u03ad\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9 \u1f65\u03c3\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1 \u03c4\u1f70 \u03c3\u03ba\u03ac\u03c6\u03b7). We discussed various translations of \u1f08\u03bd\u03b5\u03bc\u03bf\u03b4\u03c1\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9, including the suggestion of the editors of our textbook, Evan Hayes and Stephen Nimis, “Wind Walkers”, and the translation by A. M. Harmon in his 1913 Loeb translation, “Volplaneurs.”<\/p>\n

“Volplaneurs” is French for “Wind Walkers,” but why did Harmon choose to use French here? Perhaps this was intended to be a nod to the great French science-fiction writer of the nineteenth century, Jules Verne!<\/p>\n

This sparked a comment by student George Adams about how Bono, the lead singer of the band U2, played a concert at Trinity in 1983 before the band was a household name. Bono climbed to the top of the Life Sciences Building and ziplined down. This is featured in an edition of\u00a0Trinity Tripod<\/em> article (below). Bono must have been what Lucian had in mind when he came up with the \u1f08\u03bd\u03b5\u03bc\u03bf\u03b4\u03c1\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9!<\/p>\n
