Who Leaves? An Analysis of Higher-Achieving Hartford Public School Students

On December 11th we presented our final poster of results to the Trinity community, friends and family, and most importantly our community partner. Achieve Hartford! was fascinated by some of the results that came about from our project “Who Stays? Who Leaves?” -an analysis of achievement and trajectory in the Hartford Public School system.

This project seeks to follow Hartford students through the Hartford Public Schools (HPS). Our analysis focuses on two simple questions:

•Among the Hartford residents attending HPS, what are the characteristics of the high-achieving students compared to the students who are not high-achieving?

•Among Hartford residents attending HPS, what are the characteristics of those who leave compared to those who stay?

Our study includes all Hartford residents grades 3 through 8 from 2008/09 to 2011/12. We conclude that, compared to those students who stay, students who leave the HPS system have different school/resident zones, ethnicities, grade levels, and attend schools that had comparable test score rankings. However, high-achievement does not distinguish those who leave from those who stay.

This last sentence really brings forth a crucial finding within our research. The acting assumption around Hartford is that all of the smart students are leaving the area. However, we found that the achievement levels of students are statistically insignificant when determining if a student stays or leaves. In the following image, you can see that of the 6264 students in our data set in 2008/09, 15.5% of them were high achievers, however of the 916 students who left, 14.62% were high achievers and of the remaining 5348 students who stayed, 15.35% were high achievers. The percentage of high achievers that stay and leave remain similar across all four years, which shows that high achievement is insignificant in determining if a student leaves the Hartford Public School system.

Read more about their project:
[catlist name=rudy-sternberg orderby=date order=asc]

Ben Rudy ’13 (left) and Evan Sternberg ’13 (right) are economics majors who are analyzing patterns among higher-achieving students in Hartford Public Schools, in partnership with a local education foundation, Achieve Hartford.
