In Dr. Rachael Barlow’s workshop, we covered the following issues:

Question design. The usefulness of data gathered from an interview relies heavily on the questions asked. Dr. Barlow outlined these three main types of questions: (1) Main questions (2) Probes and (3) Follow-up questions. Because follow-up questions serve as an important tool in gathering in-depth information, careful listening plays a crucial role in a successful interview.

Practicing Questions—Getting the most out of your answers. Fellows practiced asking questions, and in doing so learned about the important distinctions between interrogative words like how, why, and did. This practice also underscored the importance of asking questions that lend themselves to open answers rich with information, rather than one-word responses.

Technology. Modern technology can be very helpful in gathering, transcribing, and analyzing interview data. Dr. Barlow suggests that fellows can use the following to assist in these tasks: Digital recorders, transcription software (Express Scribe or F4), and analysis software like Atlas.ti, which is available through the Social Science Center.

You can find a full version of Dr. Barlow’s presentation linked here.

Many CLI Research Fellows are conducting research that relies on qualititative data that is sourced from interviews.
