By reviewing the effects these techniques can have on a slide, we explored ways students can make the main point of every slide concise, clear and meaningful.

Abstract Concept Diagrams: If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a diagram is worth a thousand pictures. We looked at different types of flow diagrams, content matrices, and charts to help students better understand how these diagrams can be more effective at communicating overall impact than a long brick of text.

Data Visualization: Many project involved large and complicated data sets; however, for the purpose of the students’ presentations, it was more important to communicate the meaning of the data, rather than the bulk of it. We looked at how to simplify data for presentations, and how to add highlights to important findings to show relevant findings.

While the workshop was intended to focus on the students’ presentations, many of the topics also related to the creation of their research posters, which also included many concept diagrams and data visualizations.

Click here to view the 2013-2014 presentation skills workshop materials

Suggested Readings:

Confessions of a Public Speaker, Chapters 1 and 5

Slide:ology – Abstract and Realistic Concept Diagram Schemas

TED Talks: Presentation Design Guidelines

Technical Support Tutorials:

For PC users

PowerPoint 2010: Basic Tasks

PowerPoint 2010: Themes

PowerPoint 2010: Using SmartArt

For Mac users

Office:mac Getting Started with PowerPoint

Office:mac Design with themes — Part 1: The Basics

Office:mac SmartArt Graphics

iWork Keynote Video Tutorials

The goal of the workshop was simple: help students create presentation slides with less text and more visual aids to accompany their presentations to their Community Partners. In this workshop, we analyzed real examples of student work, and focused on three core concepts: Visual Design Basics: We examined how contrast, flow, hierarchy, unity, proximity and whitespace all […]
