{"id":1058,"date":"2013-05-24T21:57:17","date_gmt":"2013-05-25T01:57:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/cli-research\/?p=1058"},"modified":"2013-05-24T21:57:17","modified_gmt":"2013-05-25T01:57:17","slug":"celebrating-conclusions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/cli-research\/2013\/05\/24\/celebrating-conclusions\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating Conclusions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the first warmish evening of Spring, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/cli-research\/colloquium\/\" target=\"_blank\">Community Learning Colloquium Fellows,<\/a>\u00a0their community partners, students, and enthusiastic faculty and staff gathered in the social science center of Trinity College as part of the Community Learning Initiative&#8217;s Community Partners Appreciation Event. \u00a0The event brought to a close a year of exciting work with the presentation of the student research posters, guest presenters, and samba music.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1118\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1118\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1118 \" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/cli-research\/files\/2013\/05\/2013-04-24-18.05.46-e1369442827849-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/cli-research\/files\/2013\/05\/2013-04-24-18.05.46-e1369442827849-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/cli-research\/files\/2013\/05\/2013-04-24-18.05.46-e1369442827849-640x426.jpg 640w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/cli-research\/files\/2013\/05\/2013-04-24-18.05.46-e1369442827849.jpg 1728w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1118\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tim Naratil and Emily Howe explain their project to UCAN Executive Director, Alta Lash<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Four student researchers shared the findings of their year-long projects with the audience. \u00a0 The atmosphere at the event clearly radiated with their achievements. \u00a0Emily Howe and Tim Naratil explained their innovative work on teaching metacognitive skills to middle school children. \u00a0The team of two even proposed a new, age-appropriate measure of metacognition for researchers who work in this field.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1060\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1060\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1060\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/cli-research\/files\/2013\/05\/2013-04-24-18.17.26-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/cli-research\/files\/2013\/05\/2013-04-24-18.17.26-200x300.jpg 200w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/cli-research\/files\/2013\/05\/2013-04-24-18.17.26-426x640.jpg 426w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/cli-research\/files\/2013\/05\/2013-04-24-18.17.26.jpg 1152w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1060\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sarah Kacevich explains her work to the Director of the Center for Urban and Global Studies, Dean Chen, and Alta Lash.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/cli-research\/fellows-2012-13\/maharaj-best\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ayiti Mahrahji- Best<\/a>\u00a0was delighted with her final poster product, which highlighted her ethnographic work investigating the use of language translation services in an urban hospital serving a diverse population.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/cli-research\/fellows-2012-13\/kacevich\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sarah Kacevich<\/a>\u00a0beamed with pride when speaking about her research on faith-based community organizations and their role in helping immigrant communities access their human rights to education. The dedication to civic engagement and community learning was evident when listening to all of these students speak.<\/p>\n<p>The event also included a visual presentation by Jennifer Schackner of the artwork of immigrant women around the Hartford metropolitan area. \u00a0Jennifer worked closely with these women to help promote their artistic productions as part of her Community Psychology course.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1124\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1124\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1124 \" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/cli-research\/files\/2013\/05\/2013-04-24-18.54.56-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/cli-research\/files\/2013\/05\/2013-04-24-18.54.56-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/cli-research\/files\/2013\/05\/2013-04-24-18.54.56-640x426.jpg 640w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/cli-research\/files\/2013\/05\/2013-04-24-18.54.56.jpg 1728w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1124\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jennifer Schackner with her community partner, Lynne Williamson, of the CT Cultural Heritage Arts Program, and her Psychology Professor, Laura Holt.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The official event ended with the lively bonus of Samba music. Eric Galm, Associate Professor of Music, brought his Trinity College Samba Ensemble to the event, and delighted the audience with live music. The Research Colloquium helped the student researchers to come together as a community of young scholars as they encountered the struggles of independent research, and even more importantly to work together on how to communicate their research to broader audiences and collaborate effectively with their community partners.
