During the summer of 2015, I began working in the emergency center at Cape Cod Hospital. The functional purpose of my job as a scribe is to streamline the process of ordering medical tests and discharge procedures so that doctors can be as efficient as possible and reduce patient wait times. Cape Cod Hospital consistently has the busiest emergency center in the state of Massachusetts which makes the pace of this job rapid and demanding.
When a patient is checked into a room, the ticker on their wait time immediately starts. As soon as he is available, the doctor assess the patient during which time I make record of the presenting symptoms and tests he wants ordered and input them into the hospitals online database. The importance of attention to detail and appropriate bedside manner cannot be overstated. Bouncing around from patient to patient a six hour shift passes in a flash.
