Bicentennial Strategic Planning Commission

Bicentennial Strategic Planning Process – Sign up by June 3, 2016

Underlying Principles. All of our bicentennial strategic planning will honor our legacy of academic excellence in the liberal arts, science, and engineering; promote a culture of respect and inclusion in our diverse community; strengthen both our engagement with the city of Hartford and around the world; and prioritize financial and environmental sustainability for the College. All committees of the Bicentennial Strategic Planning Commission will work to advance these shared priorities.

Structure of the steering committee. The steering committee for the Bicentennial Strategic Planning Commission will consist of the chairs of the following subcommittees (see below), as well as the faculty secretary, the Student Government Association president, and the chairs of both the Exempt and Non-Exempt councils. In addition, the new vice president for communications and marketing will serve as the communications liaison, and David Andres, special assistant to the president, will serve as coordinator and historian of the process. Members of faculty and student governance committees are particularly encouraged to participate.

Subcommittees and chairs. The five committees and their chairs, who were selected in consultation with Faculty Conference, are highlighted below. President Berger-Sweeney and the chairs will select the members of the subcommittees by July 2016.

  • Partnering with Hartford. Distinguish Trinity as a College committed to sustained, long-term partnerships in Hartford. [chairs: Susan Masino, Vernon Roosa Professor of Applied Science; and Jason Rojas, chief of staff and director of community relations]
  • A Global College. Identify what it means to be a global college in an urban environment. [chairs: Tim Cresswell, incoming dean of the faculty and vice president for academic affairs; and Anne Lambright, Charles A. Dana Research Associate Professor of Language and Culture Studies]
  • Learning and Skill Development Inside and Outside of the Classroom. Adequately prepare our students for the 21st century. One member of the Faculty Curriculum Committee will be invited. [chairs: Sonia Cardenas, professor of political science and interim dean of the faculty; Joe DiChristina, dean of campus life and vice president for student affairs; Chris Hager, associate professor of English; and Melanie Stein, professor of mathematics and interim dean of the faculty]
  • Resources. Seek ways build a more financially sustainable future by diversifying revenues and engaging in collaborative partnerships. One member of the Planning and Budget Council will be invited. [chairs: Dan Hitchell, incoming vice president of finance and chief financial officer; and Kevin McMahon, John R. Reitemeyer Professor of Political Science].
  • Facilities and Environmental Sustainability. Identify governance structures to ensure that the facilities projects on campus match our needs and support our mission while creating a more environmentally sustainable campus. [chairs: Kathleen Curran, professor of fine arts; and Deke Mathieu, general counsel and secretary of the College].

Timeline. The steering committee will meet in June 2016 and late August/early September to define more clearly the planning process for the fall. There will be opportunities for participation by all of our constituencies throughout fall 2016 as the subcommittees and steering committee do their work. By February 2017, the steering committee will produce a draft planning document, which will be shared broadly with the community for comments. The goal of the process is to have a plan to share with the NEASC reaccreditation committee during its March 2017 visit and to use the plan to set priorities for a fundraising campaign, which we expect to launch within the next two to three years. The Bicentennial Strategic Planning Commission will also sponsor a website so that all members of the community can monitor and participate in the ongoing planning efforts.

Volunteer. Please state below the committee on which you’d like to serve and how you could contribute to that committee.
