Watching and discussing films with others is strongly encouraged, but each essay must be written independently. Consider these reflection questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is filmmakers&#8217; implicit or explicit theory of change? Specifically, how do they define the problem, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1N5iHE08tiJ6dFwWfxhK2qow_WRTbFizu1yqXuqpIWnU\/edit?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\">policy chain<\/a>, and desired goals?<\/li>\n<li>Identify the most crucial scenes in the movie (and take at least one <a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/jackdougherty\/2012\/09\/27\/screenshot\/\" target=\"_blank\">screenshot<\/a> to include in your essay). Whose stories do\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0appear in this documentary?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>After viewing your film<\/strong>, research additional questions (and <a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/edreform\/search-strategies\/\" target=\"_blank\">search for sources<\/a> beyond the film&#8217;s companion website), such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What were the intended goals of the film, according to essays by (or interviews with) directors, producers, or advocates? Who was their audience, and how did they hope to influence them?<\/li>\n<li>What types of groups or individuals have financed or publicized the video?<\/li>\n<li>How has the film &#8212; or any particular scenes or factual claims &#8212; been praised or criticized in education reform debates?<\/li>\n<li>What types of audiences have seen the film, and how did they react to what they saw?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>When writing your<\/strong> <strong>essay,\u00a0<\/strong>be sure to address these evaluation criteria:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Present a clear and insightful thesis in the introduction, which addresses key reflection questions above and offers readers a deeper understanding of the film.<\/li>\n<li>Support major claims with persuasive evidence from the video,\u00a0its companion website, AND at least one relevant external source.<\/li>\n<li>Include sufficient background for readers who have not seen the film (such as a one-paragraph plot summary).<\/li>\n<li>Support your textual claims with visual evidence by inserting at least one screenshot, with the film&#8217;s title and timestamp in the caption.<\/li>\n<li>Cite the film and other sources using any scholarly format (such as Chicago-style footnotes, or APA\/MLA inline citations with bibliography). To note specific scenes from the film, use timestamps (e.g. 0:54) in place of page numbers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Sample video citations:<\/span><br \/>\nIf you use MLA inline citations with a bibliography, an excerpt might look like this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>. . . rates as the most pivotal scene (Guggenheim 0:54).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Bibliography (at the end of the essay):<br \/>\nGuggenheim, Davis. <i>Waiting for \u201cSuperman.\u201d<\/i>\u00a02010.
