Create a new page, add a short title and text, and Publish.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/action-lab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/wordpress-page-publish.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/action-lab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/wordpress-page-publish-1024x362.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"186\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Float mouse over home symbol\/site name and control-click to open &#8220;View Page&#8221; or &#8220;Visit Site&#8221; in a new tab. This allows you to make edits on the back end (Dashboard) and view changes on the front end (your public site). Add a title and caption and provide the source credit (and link). To display your PDF file as an embedded scrollable image in your WordPress page.&nbsp; If you have a copy of the PDF file:<a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/jackdougherty\/files\/2019\/02\/upload-sample-pdf.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2956 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/jackdougherty\/files\/2019\/02\/upload-sample-pdf-640x271.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"271\"><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Upload the PDF to your WordPress Media Library, similar to an image<\/li>\n<li>In the Media Library, click the PDF icon to open its properties<\/li>\n<li>Copy and paste the long URL to the uploaded PDF file, which will look like this: <code>http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/jackdougherty\/files\/2019\/02\/sample.pdf<\/code><\/li>\n<li>In your editor, type this bracketed &#8220;gview shortcode&#8221;, and insert the long URL pathname to your PDF file. To fix some problems, you may need to work in the &#8220;Text&#8221; tab to clean up small issues.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/jackdougherty\/files\/2019\/02\/visual-vs-text.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2961 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/jackdougherty\/files\/2019\/02\/visual-vs-text.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"120\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"pages-posts\">Pages versus Posts, and Set Front Page Display<\/h3>\n<p>WordPress displays two major types of content:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pages &#8211; for more permanent content, easier to find in menu<\/li>\n<li>Posts &#8211; for most recent content, with newest at the top<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can design your site to show only Pages, or only Posts, or both.<\/p>\n<p>Go to Dashboard &gt; Settings &gt; Reading to determine if your website front page will display:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your latest posts, OR<\/li>\n<li>A static front page (created by you, with a title such as &#8220;Home&#8221; or &#8220;About&#8221;), with the option to display posts on another page (also created by you, titled &#8220;Posts&#8221; or &#8220;News&#8221; and simply serving as a placeholder for the newest Posts you create).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/jackdougherty\/files\/2019\/02\/reading-settings.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-2954\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/jackdougherty\/files\/2019\/02\/reading-settings-640x488.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"488\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"customizer\">Modify Theme Appearance with Customizer<\/h3>\n<p>The Trinity Commons default WordPress theme is titled Twenty Seventeen, which is a responsive theme (automatically resizes to small devices or large screens) that beginning users can easily modify with the Appearance &gt; Customizer tool. Read more about the theme features at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/codex.wordpress.org\/Twenty_Seventeen\">https:\/\/codex.wordpress.org\/Twenty_Seventeen<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/action-lab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/appearance-customize.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-51 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/action-lab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/appearance-customize.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"224\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the Customizer, select <strong>Site Identity<\/strong> to change the header or tagline text. Click the blue Publish button at the top to save your changes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/action-lab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/customize-site-identity.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-52 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/action-lab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/customize-site-identity.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"430\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the Customizer, select <strong>Header Media<\/strong> to upload a different image. Recommended images must be high-resolution: at least 2000 pixels wide by 1200 pixels high. You will be given the option to crop a larger image on upload. In theory, you could upload a header video via YouTube, but internet speed issues often produce a less-than-desirable outcome. <strong>Stick with images<\/strong>. Click the blue Publish button to save changes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/action-lab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/customize-header-media.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-53\" src=\"https:\/\/action-lab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/customize-header-media-951x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"565\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"menu\">Modify the Menu<\/h3>\n<p>In the Customizer, select <strong>Menus<\/strong> to organize menu items on your front page. Select Create New Menu, choose its location (Top Menu), and give this menu a name (such as Top). Then click Next to Add Items to your menu, such as Pages (which you created above) or Custom Links (to point to an external web site).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/action-lab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/customize-menu.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55\" src=\"https:\/\/action-lab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/customize-menu.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"409\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Click items to add them to your menu, and reorder with drag-and-drop, then Publish to save changes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/action-lab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/customize-menu-reorder.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-58 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/action-lab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/customize-menu-reorder-1024x523.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"268\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"wide\">Set TwentySeventeen pages to wide view<\/h3>\n<p>By default, the TwentySeventeen page view is narrow. To set to wide view:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Appearance &gt; Customize &gt; Home Page Settings &gt; Select a Static Page<\/li>\n<li>In Customizer, a new submenu will now appear: Theme Options<\/li>\n<li>Theme Options &gt; 1 column (for wider view, rather than 2 columns)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"footnote\">Insert a Footnote<\/h3>\n<p>Trinity Commons offers the <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/simple-footnotes\/\">Simple Footnotes plugin<\/a> (go to Plugins &gt; Activate).&nbsp;To insert an interactive footnote after your main text, wrap the note text inside bracketed &#8220;ref shortcodes,&#8221; similar to this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/jackdougherty\/files\/2019\/02\/simple-footnotes-shortcode.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-2970\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/jackdougherty\/files\/2019\/02\/simple-footnotes-shortcode-640x220.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"220\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Your text will appear as shown in the demo below, with a footnote number automatically displayed. Float over the cursor to see the note in a tooltip, or click to view the note at the bottom of the page.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the main text.[ref]Here&#8217;s the footnote text.[\/ref]<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"table\">Insert a Table<\/h3>\n<p>If you need to insert a table into WordPress, one quick option is to capture a screenshot of a spreadsheet (see above). Learn more about the iframe concept at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/datavizforall.org\/embed.html\">https:\/\/datavizforall.org\/embed.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Copy the iframe embed code for your interactive chart or map. For example, see this screenshot of the embed code for a Social Explorer map:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-36 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/action-lab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/social-explorer-embed-code.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"563\"><\/p>\n<p>Paste the embed code into your WordPress editor window, and <strong>modify the iframe code<\/strong> as shown below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At the front end, <strong>replace<\/strong> the less-than symbol <code>&lt;<\/code> with an open bracket: <code>[<\/code><\/li>\n<li>At the back end, <strong>remove <\/strong>the entire iframe end-tag, and&nbsp;<strong>replace<\/strong> the greater-than <code>&gt;<\/code>&nbsp;&nbsp;with a closed bracket: <code>]<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/action-lab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/iframe-modify-code2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-68\" src=\"https:\/\/action-lab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/iframe-modify-code2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"593\" height=\"192\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Your modified iframe code should appear <strong>similar<\/strong>&nbsp;to the image below:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/action-lab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/iframe-modified-code3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-69\" src=\"https:\/\/action-lab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/iframe-modified-code3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"190\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Your iframe may contain some<strong>&nbsp;optional elements<\/strong> (such as frameborder, marginwidth, scrolling, etc.)&nbsp; The only <strong>required elements<\/strong> are the src (source url), along with the width and height&nbsp; (in pixels or percentage, such as &#8220;100%&#8221;). For example, the &#8220;Overview&#8221; of sections at the top of this page uses anchor links.
