Karuizawa sits below the one of the most active volcanic regions in Japan, Mt. Asama.\u00a0 Just prior to our arrival the threat level of the mountain had been increased and climbers were not allowed to be within 200 meters of the crater due to gaseous emissions.\u00a0 We spent one day hiking on Mt. Asama<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Back on the bullet train, we headed north to the region that was devastated by the 2011 great Honshu earthquake and tsunami.\u00a0 While much of the clean-up for many of the cities , towns and villages has completed, the region is far from recovered.\u00a0\u00a0 No photo does the scope of the problem justice but a city that was one of the hardest hit, Rikuzentakata, is attempting to rebuild by literally moving mountains.\u00a0 A giant rock crusher and conveyor system is moving earth material from adjacent hills and raising the ground level of the valley for future building.\u00a0 The scene is surreal when one considers that the vast open valley once was a densely populated town.\u00a0\u00a0 It was sobering yet inspiring as to how the inhabitants of Rikukentakata are attempting to bring back their city.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1292\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/envs\/files\/2015\/07\/conveyors.png\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1292\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1292\" alt=\"Conveyors bringing earth materials from mountains in the background.\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/envs\/files\/2015\/07\/conveyors.png\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/envs\/files\/2015\/07\/conveyors.png 700w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/envs\/files\/2015\/07\/conveyors-300x225.png 300w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/envs\/files\/2015\/07\/conveyors-600x450.png 600w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/envs\/files\/2015\/07\/conveyors-400x300.png 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1292\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Conveyors bringing earth materials from mountains in the background.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/envs\/files\/2015\/07\/rock_crushers.mov\">See the rock crushers<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We stayed most of time in the Honshu region at the Hotel Boyo in the fishing town of Kesannuma.\u00a0 It was an especially important place during the tsunami because of its proximity on the hillside above the town. \u00a0It\u2019s one of the few major buildings in town that was not destroyed during the tsunami and fires that ensued.
