The dozens of students, faculty, staff, and visitors were not disappointed. Rutherford read \u201cCamp Winnesaka,\u201d a short story from his award-winning 2013 book, <em>The Peripatetic Coffin and Other Stories<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trincoll.edu\/NewsEvents\/NewsArticles\/PublishingImages\/PeripateticCoffin.jpg\" width=\"170\" height=\"257\" \/>\u201cCamp Winnesaka\u201d is told from the perspective of a camp counselor, the Head Eagle, whose summer camp is struggling with low enrollment. After the disappearance of Moosey, a stuffed and mounted moose head that serves as Camp Winnesaka\u2019s unofficial mascot, the Head Eagle tries to boost morale by leading his campers to war with neighboring Camp Chickapony. Essentially, everything that can go wrong does, as Rutherford\u2019s introductory comments suggested.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that I tell you guys to keep the death count low in your stories,\u201d he told the students in the room before he started reading. \u201cBut do as I say, not as I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCamp Winnesaka\u201d is one of eight short stories in <em>The Peripatetic Coffin<\/em>, Rutherford\u2019s debut book. The anthology was named a Barnes &amp; Noble Discover Great New Writers Pick, a \u201cBest Book of the Summer\u201d by <em>Publishers Weekly<\/em>, and long-listed for the Frank O\u2019Connor Award. It was also a finalist for the both the National Book Critics Circle\u2019s John Leonard Prize and the<em> Los Angeles Times<\/em>\u2019 Art Seidenbaum Award, received an honorable mention for the PEN\/Hemingway Award, and won a Minnesota Book Award.<\/p>\n<p>Rutherford\u2019s work has appeared in <em>Ploughshares<\/em>, <em>One Story<\/em>, <em>American Short Fiction<\/em>, and <em>The Best American Short Stories<\/em>.
