Assistant Professor of History Jennifer Regan-Lefebvre<\/p><\/div>\n

Jennifer Regan-Lefebvre<\/a> is an assistant professor of history at Trinity and taught a new course, \u201cDownton Abbey in Historical Context,\u201d during January Term last month. She has published two books on the history of modern Britain and Ireland and is writing a new historical monograph entitled Imperial Wine: How the British Empire Made the New World<\/em>. So it is not surprising that the popular wine website VinePair<\/em> turned to Regan-Lefebvre for her expertise for its recent article, \u201cAsk a Historian: How to Drink Like You Lived in Downton Abbey.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Acknowledging the millions of viewers addicted to the PBS series <\/em>Downton Abbey<\/em><\/a>, now in its fifth season, VinePair<\/em> quotes Regan-Lefebvre: \u201cAll of us could throw a Downton-themed dinner party if we wanted. You\u2019ll just need a set of silver fish knives, a copy of the Larousse Gastronomique<\/em>, a strong constitution, and a trust fund.\u201d Read the entire article here.<\/a><\/p>\n

Regan-Lefebvre\u2019s January Term class grew out of a similar course<\/a> she developed for Trinity\u2019s Academy of Lifelong Learning<\/a>, through which courses on a wide range of subjects, taught by distinguished current and former faculty members, are offered to adults in the community at large.<\/p>\n

Trinity students visit the Watkinson Library to look at maps and posters and use a late-19th century stereoscope to view 3D images of the battlefields of World War I.<\/p><\/div>\n

Regan-Lefebvre explains, \u201cDownton Abbey<\/em> is set in such an exciting period of political, social, and cultural change in Britain. It\u2019s a fantastic way to draw students into big debates in British history, and also to take advantage of the Watkinson Library\u2019s<\/a> rich collections of early 20th-century material.\u201d Students in the January Term class<\/a> enjoyed playing the gramophone and pouring over World War I recruitment posters in the Watkinson Library. \u201cRick Ring and the Watkinson staff have been so enthusiastic about my projects,\u201d Regan-Lefebvre continues, \u201cthat I now try to use the Watkinson\u2019s material in all my classes. The ability to incorporate this special resource is one of the things I enjoy most about teaching at Trinity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Regan-Lefebvre, who joined the Trinity faculty in 2013, earned her B.S. from Georgetown University\u2019s School of Foreign Service and her M.A. and Ph.D. from Queen\u2019s University Belfast. She has taught at the University of Exeter, the American University of Paris, and Cambridge University, where she was a fellow, the director of studies in history, and the assistant tutor at King\u2019s College. She was named one of University of Exeter\u2019s \u201cTop 10 Most Innovative Teachers\u201d in 2010.
