{"id":68,"date":"2012-08-20T21:41:20","date_gmt":"2012-08-20T21:41:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/facultyhighlights\/?p=68"},"modified":"2013-03-27T16:40:38","modified_gmt":"2013-03-27T16:40:38","slug":"barry-schaller-on-public-radio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/facultyhighlights\/2012\/08\/20\/barry-schaller-on-public-radio\/","title":{"rendered":"Barry Schaller discusses new book on public radio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/facultyhighlights\/files\/2012\/08\/Schaller.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-432\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/facultyhighlights\/files\/2012\/08\/Schaller.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"195\" \/><\/a>Barry Schaller, visiting lecturer in public policy and law at Trinity College, clinical visiting lecturer in law at Yale Law School,\u00a0and retired associate justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court, \u00a0recently made several radio appearances where he discussed topics closely related to his new book,\u00a0<em>Veterans on Trial: The Coming Court Battles over PTSD<\/em>\u00a0(June 2012,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.potomacbooksinc.com\/Books\/BookDetail.aspx?productID=271051\" target=\"_blank\">Potomac Books, Inc.<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>During appearances on Public Radio International&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pri.org\/stories\/politics-society\/tt-former-judge-says-courts-likely-to-face-influx-of-cases-connected-to-ptsd-10909.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Takeaway<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>on August 1<em>,<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em>WNPR&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yourpublicmedia.org\/content\/wnpr\/iraq-and-afghanistan-veterans-trial\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Where We Live<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>on August 2, and a segment for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nepr.net\/news\/veterans-mental-health-issues-have-many-consequences\" target=\"_blank\">New England Public Radio<\/a>\u00a0on August 17, Schaller detailed the legal consequences of veterans who suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)\u00a0returning from current wars.\u00a0&#8220;In Iraq and Afghanistan, you have prolonged wars with multiple deployments, with everybody being exposed to combat,&#8221; Schaller said on\u00a0<em>The Takeaway<\/em>. &#8220;It brings its own set of factors that produce mental stress at the level when it becomes a disorder.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In some cases when veterans return state-side, Schaller says that individuals react to everyday scenarios as though they<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/facultyhighlights\/files\/2012\/08\/vetsontiral1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-120\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/facultyhighlights\/files\/2012\/08\/vetsontiral1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/facultyhighlights\/files\/2012\/08\/vetsontiral1.jpg 396w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/facultyhighlights\/files\/2012\/08\/vetsontiral1-204x300.jpg 204w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 222px) 100vw, 222px\" \/><\/a>are still in a war\u00a0 zone and have trouble readjusting to domestic lives that have changed in their absence. This sometimes leads to strained relationships with friends and family, and, sometimes, domestic violence, which is legally considered criminal behavior.<\/p>\n<p>Schaller expects that soon the United States will face conditions much like the late 1970s, when the\u00a0number of veterans who entered the court system increased significantly in the few years following the Vietnam War.
