{"id":1469,"date":"2016-03-31T16:59:04","date_gmt":"2016-03-31T16:59:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/historyblog\/?p=1469"},"modified":"2016-03-31T16:59:04","modified_gmt":"2016-03-31T16:59:04","slug":"trinity-international-hip-hop-festival-program-april-7-10-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/historyblog\/2016\/03\/31\/trinity-international-hip-hop-festival-program-april-7-10-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"Trinity International Hip-Hop Festival Program, April 7\u201310, 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From its creation\u00a0in academic year 2005\u20132005 by a group of Trinity College students as a vehicle to <strong><em>&#8220;combat the disunity, segregation, and violence of Hartford, CT and Trinity College,&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> the Trinity International Hip Hop Festival\u00a0\u00a0always has close ties with several\u00a0History majors and faculty.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One its co-founders,<\/strong> for example, was <strong>Jason P. Azevedo &#8217;08<\/strong>, currently a career U.S. Department of State Foreign Service Officer specialized on Africa and Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2009, <strong>History and International Studies Assistant Professor<\/strong> <strong>Seth Markle<\/strong> has served as the main academic advisor to Trinity Chapter of Temple of Hip Hop and annual Trinity International Hip Hop Festival.<\/p>\n<p>As the coordinating group has put it, from the beginning the festival&#8217;s main strategies and goals have been <strong><em>using a &#8220;the historically education-oriented and politically revolutionary medium \u2014 Hip Hop \u2013 and focusing on its global potency and proliferation, the Trinity International Hip Hop Festival works to unify Trinity College, the city of Hartford, and the Globe.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This year&#8217;s\u00a0program<\/strong>, includes <strong>lectures and panel discussions<\/strong>\u00a0with a variety of scholars, artists, and community activists; <strong>film screenings, graffiti and photo exhibits, workshops, and performances,<\/strong> including\u00a0<strong>Dance Event \/ B-Boy Battle<\/strong> on Friday, April 8th (7pm\u20132am), the Saturday April 9th (8pm-2am)\u00a0<strong>Hip Hop Concert,<\/strong> featuring Rakim and several other MCs and DJs.
