Lab 8 – Cleaning up Waste Water (field trip)

This week we will take a second MDC field trip to the other end of the water system:  Cleaning up Waste Water.  There is a second video to watch about the MDC’s ambitious task of updating Hartford’s storm water and sanitary sewer systems.   Hartford’s waste water treatment plant has under major renovations over the last few years we have not been able to tour this facility until now…this was until COVID-19 happened.

Watch this video and answer the following questions.  It may be helpful to read the questions before watching the video so you can watch out for what to look for.

Wastewater Treatment Questions:

What nutrient is a problem in the sanitary sewage system and is the main focus (next to bacteria) of water treatment? How is this problem solved in Hartford?

Why do the Hartford waste water systems overflow when it rains, even a small amount (greater than 1/4 of an inch)?

What’s the main goal of the Clean Water Project in Hartford?

What’s the solution for treating both storm water and sanitary sewage?

Finally, what is your waste water situation where you live?  Do you know where you water goes when you flush?  Every town, city and personal septic system is different.  Find out and write a paragraph or two summarizing your waste water system at home.
