{"id":1501,"date":"2015-02-05T18:11:17","date_gmt":"2015-02-05T22:11:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/ebuckhor\/?page_id=1501"},"modified":"2015-02-05T18:11:17","modified_gmt":"2015-02-05T22:11:17","slug":"a-new-era","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-winter2015\/features\/a-new-era\/","title":{"rendered":"A New Era"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Inauguration of Joanne Berger-Sweeney, Trinity\u2019s 22nd president<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>Al Ferreira and John Marinelli<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-winter2015\/files\/2015\/02\/15458613648_ffc95c706f_z.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-1696\" style=\"margin-left: 8px;margin-right: 8px\" alt=\"15458613648_ffc95c706f_z\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-winter2015\/files\/2015\/02\/15458613648_ffc95c706f_z.jpg\" width=\"448\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-winter2015\/files\/2015\/02\/15458613648_ffc95c706f_z.jpg 640w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-winter2015\/files\/2015\/02\/15458613648_ffc95c706f_z-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><\/a>More than 1,000 people gathered in the Koeppel Community Sports Center on the chilly morning of October 26, 2014, to celebrate the Inauguration of Joanne Berger-Sweeney as 22nd president of Trinity College.<\/p>\n<p>The festive academic procession, led by the Trinity Samba Ensemble, featured more than 100 delegates representing colleges and universities from across the country, as well as Trinity students holding international flags.<\/p>\n<p>During the ceremony, representatives from alumni, students, faculty, parents, and staff offered their greetings, as did Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy and Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra. Four current or former college presidents\u2013Lawrence Bacow, president emeritus of Tufts University; Lee Pelton, president of Emerson College; Kathleen McCartney, president of Smith College; and Diana Chapman Walsh, president emerita of Wellesley College\u2013also offered their insights about higher education leadership and about Trinity\u2019s new president.<\/p>\n<p>A majestic poem, \u201cThose Whom We Admire,\u201d written and read by the prominent poet, journalist, and literary critic James Fenton, was created in honor of the Inauguration. A soaring piece of music\u2013\u201cSomething Bold to Start With\u201d\u2013also was composed specifically for the occasion by John McDonald, professor of music at Tufts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-winter2015\/files\/2015\/02\/15621025526_444032e137_z.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1697\" style=\"margin-left: 8px;margin-right: 8px\" alt=\"15621025526_444032e137_z\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-winter2015\/files\/2015\/02\/15621025526_444032e137_z.jpg\" width=\"448\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-winter2015\/files\/2015\/02\/15621025526_444032e137_z.jpg 640w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-winter2015\/files\/2015\/02\/15621025526_444032e137_z-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><\/a>Berger-Sweeney\u2019s ascendance into the President\u2019s Office marks a number of firsts for Trinity: first woman, first African American, first mother, and first neuroscientist. From her beginnings as an assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Wellesley College in 1991, to her rise to Allene Lummis Russell Professor in Neuroscience, then associate dean and director of Wellesley\u2019s Neuroscience Program, to dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at Tufts, she has marked her journey with a spirit that speaks to her willingness to try the untried, a courage that is quiet but determined.<\/p>\n<p>In her inaugural address, Berger-Sweeney encouraged all in the Trinity community to come together to guide the College into the future. \u201cExciting things are happening here,\u201d she said. \u201cThese are challenging times in higher education, in the nation, and in the world. Trinity will be a leader in this changing world. The symposia took place on Thursday, October 23 and Saturday, October 25 in the Washington Room of Mather Hall. He recorded his first two CDs during his senior year, prompting classmates to form the \u201cHouliFans,\u201d a fan base that continues to grow on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>Houlihan went on to complete his graduate work at The Juilliard School in New York City.
