{"id":622,"date":"2014-08-03T15:51:02","date_gmt":"2014-08-03T15:51:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/rring\/?p=622"},"modified":"2014-08-03T15:51:02","modified_gmt":"2014-08-03T15:51:02","slug":"henry-fuller-class-of-1937-a-bold-alumnus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/rring\/2014\/08\/03\/henry-fuller-class-of-1937-a-bold-alumnus\/","title":{"rendered":"Henry Fuller, Class of 1937: A Bold Alumnus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Posted as 6 of 10 in a series on the College Archives by Emma Paine, a graduate student intern from Simmons College]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/rring\/files\/2014\/08\/Fuller_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-624\" alt=\"Fuller_1\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/rring\/files\/2014\/08\/Fuller_1-173x300.jpg\" width=\"173\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/rring\/files\/2014\/08\/Fuller_1-173x300.jpg 173w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/rring\/files\/2014\/08\/Fuller_1-592x1024.jpg 592w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 173px) 100vw, 173px\" \/><\/a>In 1977, alumnus Henry Fuller received a letter from a friend who shared his interest in Russian history and, specifically, the Romanovs\u2014the last Russian royal family.\u00a0 Accompanied by a signed photograph of a Romanov relative, the letter suggests, \u201c&#8221;Why don&#8217;t you stuff them in with Anna Viroubova&#8217;s watercolors and let some graduate student at Palo Alto sort it out in 2196, the bicentennial of Nicky and Sunny&#8217;s coronation?&#8221;\u00a0 Trinity\u2019s not Paolo Alto, but Fuller did take his friend\u2019s advice, donating his collection of Russian history books, scrapbooks, letters, and, yes, Anna Viroubova\u2019s watercolors, to the College Archives upon his death in 2001.\u00a0 (A lifelong supporter of Trinity, he also donated $39 million from his estate to the College.\u00a0 New Hampshire\u2019s Currier Art Gallery and the Manchester, New Hampshire Historical Society also received gifts from his estate.)<\/p>\n<p>Although the items themselves are incredible, the story behind his collection is equally amazing. \u00a0\u00a0Throughout his high school and college years, Fuller had a habit of requesting autographs from world leaders and famous individuals.\u00a0 Sometimes, he also included a small gift, like when he sent King George V &#8220;an unusually centered guideline strip of four of the current 1\u00a2 U.S. Postal issue\u201d to add to his stamp collection.
