The students in <\/span>INTS401: Senior Seminar in International Studies<\/span><\/i> spent a lively Friday afternoon in the Watkinson Library examining European travel literature on Africa, Asia, and South America from the 18<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup> and 19<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup> centuries.\u00a0 We had just finished reading Mary Louise Pratt\u2019s <\/span>Imperial Eyes<\/span><\/i>, and it was a wonderful opportunity to work directly with some of the books she analyzes, such as Mungo Park\u2019s <\/span>Travels in the Interior of Africa<\/span><\/i> (Pratt uses an 1860 edition, but the Watkinson has the original 1799 edition!), John Stedman\u2019s <\/span>Narrative of a Five Years\u2019 Expedition against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam<\/span><\/i> (1796), and Maria Graham\u2019s <\/span>Journal of a Residence in Chile<\/span><\/i> (1824).\u00a0 —<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Zayde Antrim<\/span><\/p>\n
