{"id":1046,"date":"2012-12-05T19:49:45","date_gmt":"2012-12-05T19:49:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/?p=1046"},"modified":"2012-12-05T19:49:45","modified_gmt":"2012-12-05T19:49:45","slug":"roberts-brothers-correspondence-book-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/2012\/12\/05\/roberts-brothers-correspondence-book-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Roberts Brothers correspondence&#8211;book history!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2012\/12\/IMG_2466.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1047\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2012\/12\/IMG_2466-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2012\/12\/IMG_2466-300x231.jpg 300w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2012\/12\/IMG_2466-1024x789.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>We recently acquired a packet of letters which will be added to our <a href=\"http:\/\/library.trincoll.edu\/research\/watk\/manuscripts\/RobertsBrothersCollectionInventory.htm\">Roberts Brothers collection<\/a>&#8211;an archive which compliments our extensive holdings of that publishing company&#8217;s books.\u00a0 The letters date from 1884-1895, and are from the following correspondents:<\/p>\n<p>Lyman Abbott (1835-1922, American Congregationalist, ordering &#8220;[Ernest] Renan&#8217;s <em>Life of Jesus<\/em>&#8220;)<\/p>\n<p>Alexander Black (1859-1941, American author &amp; reviewer, requesting books to review for the <em>Brooklyn Times<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>Gertrude Hall (1863-1961, American author, poet &amp; translator; two letters)<\/p>\n<p>Ernest Ingersoll (1852-1946, American naturalist &amp; writer, related to his story &#8220;Sacred Spring&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>James Martineau (1805-1900, English minister, philosopher &amp; author, regarding <a href=\"http:\/\/ctwweb.wesleyan.edu:7002\/vwebv\/holdingsInfo?bibId=1233752\"><em>Hours of Thought<\/em><\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Edward T. Roe (b. 1847, American lawyer &amp; author, regarding a manuscript)<\/p>\n<p>Flora L. Shaw (1852-1929, English journalist and author, thank-you note for royalties)<\/p>\n<p>Reuben Gold Thwaites (1853-1913, American historical writer, two (2) letters, seeking &#8220;an Eastern publisher,&#8221; which accompanied his manuscript of <em>Afloat on the Ohio<\/em>; the book was eventually published by a Chicago firm, Way &amp; Williams, in 1897).<\/p>\n<p>Julius H.
