{"id":1145,"date":"2013-02-15T20:01:49","date_gmt":"2013-02-15T20:01:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/?p=1145"},"modified":"2013-02-15T20:01:49","modified_gmt":"2013-02-15T20:01:49","slug":"jazzing-up-the-watkinson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/2013\/02\/15\/jazzing-up-the-watkinson\/","title":{"rendered":"Jazzing up the Watkinson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2013\/02\/Rubenstein.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1146\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2013\/02\/Rubenstein-223x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"223\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2013\/02\/Rubenstein-223x300.jpg 223w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2013\/02\/Rubenstein-763x1024.jpg 763w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2013\/02\/Rubenstein.jpg 1787w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 223px) 100vw, 223px\" \/><\/a>The Watkinson recently accepted and took possession of some 4,000 sound recordings, mostly 78-rpm records from the 1930s, 40s and 50s (ca. 3,500), but also 33-rpm (ca. 900) and 45-rpm (ca. 300) records from the 1950s and 60s.<\/p>\n<p>These recordings were collected by Bennett &#8220;Bud&#8221; Rubenstein (1917-2000), who was a jazz\/swing\/pop enthusiast who began collecting music as a teen, and often performed as a dee-jay at dance parties.\u00a0 He was also a jazz pianist who went to Julliard Music School, but dropped out after a year because he was more interested in improvising than in theory or disciplined study.\u00a0 World War II took him overseas, where he served in Italy and France.\u00a0 He was a forward observer in the Army Field Artillery, managed his unit&#8217;s radio communications, and saw action in the Battle of the Bulge.<\/p>\n<p>Returning with a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star, he married and had children, settling in Norwich CT and joining his father&#8217;s woolen mills business in Yantic&#8211;abandoning his hopes for a Big Band career.\u00a0 He was a passionate collector and a great piano improvisor in his own right, both at family events and as an accompanist to musical productions at the Beth Jacob Synagogue in Norwich, CT.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_2505.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1147\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_2505-300x167.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_2505-300x167.jpg 300w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2013\/02\/IMG_2505-1024x570.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2013\/02\/img656.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1148\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2013\/02\/img656-245x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"245\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2013\/02\/img656-245x300.jpg 245w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2013\/02\/img656-838x1024.jpg 838w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 245px) 100vw, 245px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Watkinson recently accepted and took possession of some 4,000 sound recordings, mostly 78-rpm records from the 1930s, 40s and 50s (ca. 3,500), but also 33-rpm (ca. 900) and 45-rpm (ca. 300) records from the 1950s and 60s.
