{"id":1568,"date":"2014-04-07T19:38:08","date_gmt":"2014-04-07T19:38:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/?p=1568"},"modified":"2014-04-10T23:51:51","modified_gmt":"2014-04-10T23:51:51","slug":"the-bard-in-the-watkinson-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/2014\/04\/07\/the-bard-in-the-watkinson-5\/","title":{"rendered":"The Bard in the Watkinson (5): The Third Folio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2014\/04\/Third-folio0001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1569\" alt=\"Third folio0001\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2014\/04\/Third-folio0001-193x300.jpg\" width=\"193\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2014\/04\/Third-folio0001-193x300.jpg 193w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2014\/04\/Third-folio0001-661x1024.jpg 661w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 193px) 100vw, 193px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We have an excellent <a href=\"http:\/\/ctwweb.wesleyan.edu:7002\/vwebv\/holdingsInfo?bibId=631858\">facsimile<\/a> of the Third Folio, which appeared in 1663, and a second issue in 1664, augmented, as the title-page tells us, with seven plays:\u00a0 <em>Pericles<\/em>; <em>The London Prodigall<\/em>; <em>The History of Thomas Lord Cromwell<\/em>; <em>Sir John Oldcastle Lord Cobham<\/em>; <em>The Puritan Widow<\/em>; <em>A York-Shire Tragedy<\/em>; <em>The Tragedy of Locrine.<\/em>\u00a0 Only Pericles is considered to be Shakespeare&#8217;s (partially)<\/p>\n<p>Because of their scarcity relative to the other folios, it is though that many were destroyed before distribution in the London fire of 1666.<\/p>\n<p>According to one of the standard scholarly works on the subject, the Third Folio &#8220;does more credit to the printing house which turned it out and is largely free from gross typographical errors. But from the fact that it unintentionally omitted a great many words, we infer that the proof reading given it was not sufficiently careful to catch unobtrusive compositor&#8217;s errors.
