{"id":267,"date":"2011-04-22T15:27:56","date_gmt":"2011-04-22T19:27:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watkinson.wp.trincoll.edu\/?p=267"},"modified":"2015-08-12T15:59:34","modified_gmt":"2015-08-12T15:59:34","slug":"a-big-book-needs-a-big-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/2011\/04\/22\/a-big-book-needs-a-big-case\/","title":{"rendered":"A big book needs a big case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2011\/04\/IMG_1765.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-268\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2011\/04\/IMG_1765.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2011\/04\/IMG_1765.jpg 2592w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2011\/04\/IMG_1765-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2011\/04\/IMG_1765-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The Watkinson received a VERY large package yesterday morning.\u00a0 Shown here in its crate, in which it was shipped from Germany, is\u00a0a new display case for our copy of John James Audubon&#8217;s double-elephant folio <em>Birds of\u00a0America.<\/em><\/p>\n<div>Trinity&#8217;s copy was a bequest from alumnus Dr. Gurdon Russell (1815-1909) in May of 1909, and it is apparently the copy that Robert Havell (the engraver) owned.\u00a0 Havell is said to have selected every plate himself for this copy.\u00a0 Russell bought the set in 1882 for $1,150.\u00a0 The last set sold was knocked down at Sotheby&#8217;s (London) on December 6, 2010, and broke the record for the sale of any printed book&#8211;$11.5 million.\u00a0 A pinnacle of art, science, and book making, it is the\u00a0most valuable printed book in the world.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>The case will be placed\u00a0near the wall behind it (after we remove the bookshelves), and we will work with a designer to create a permanent exhibition with information on the wall about Audubon, his book, and our copy&#8217;s provenance, which will be finished by August.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Watkinson received a VERY large package yesterday morning.\u00a0 Shown here in its crate, in which it was shipped from Germany, is\u00a0a new display case for our copy of John James Audubon&#8217;s double-elephant folio Birds of\u00a0America.
