T. Barnum\u2019s birth just crossed my desktop, so I thought a glance into the stacks to see what we have would be interesting.\u00a0 Barnum was born in Bethel, CT on July 5, 1810 to Philo F. Barnum, a merchant farmer who apparently descended from one of the eight original proprietors who established Danbury in 1685.\u00a0 His mother was Irena Taylor, daughter of Revolutionary War veteran Phineas Taylor.\u00a0 After a few false starts as a clerk and a newspaper owner, Barnum essentially moved to New York in 1835 and started shucking &amp; jiving, beginning with purchasing the services of Joice Heth, purportedly the 161-year-old ex-nurse of George Washington, for $1,000, and making $750 a week by charging admission to hear her spin tales of our first president for a year until she died.\u00a0 Schemes like the American Museum and his various traveling shows (including <em>The Greatest Show on Earth<\/em>) generated tremendous crowds and fans, and had an enormous impact on American popular culture.<\/p>\n<p>The Watkinson has a nice handful of sources, including the second edition of Barnum&#8217;s autobiography, entitled\u00a0<em>Struggles and Triumphs: Or, Forty Years&#8217; Recollections<\/em> (1869)&#8211;from which the portrait of Barnum shown here was scanned.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2010\/09\/Barnum2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-52 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2010\/09\/Barnum2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"183\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2010\/09\/Barnum2.jpg 700w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2010\/09\/Barnum2-183x300.jpg 183w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2010\/09\/Barnum2-626x1024.jpg 626w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 183px) 100vw, 183px\" \/><\/a>&#8220;Without printer&#8217;s ink,&#8221; Barnum once said at a banquet in his honor, &#8220;I should have been no bigger than Tom Thumb.&#8221;\u00a0 We\u00a0have a copy of his <em>Humbugs of the World <\/em>(1866),which includes some of his theories about the effective use of publicity.\u00a0 Barnum defined a\u00a0&#8220;humbug&#8221; as &#8220;putting on glittering appearances&#8211;outside show&#8211;novel expedients, by which to suddenly arrest public attention and attract the public eye and ear.&#8221;\u00a0 I include here a page from the table of contents.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2010\/09\/Barnum4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-53\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2010\/09\/Barnum4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"209\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2010\/09\/Barnum4.jpg 700w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2010\/09\/Barnum4-209x300.jpg 209w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 209px) 100vw, 209px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Art of Money-Getting, or Success in Life&#8221; was first delivered as a lecture to an audience of over 2,000 in London on December 29, 1858, and in\u00a0the <em>London Times <\/em>review of it the next day, its organization was likened to Cicero&#8217;s <em>De Officiis<\/em>.\u00a0 On our shelves we have an edition of this printed in 1882.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2010\/09\/Barnum3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-54\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2010\/09\/Barnum3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"191\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2010\/09\/Barnum3.jpg 700w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2010\/09\/Barnum3-191x300.jpg 191w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2010\/09\/Barnum3-654x1024.jpg 654w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 191px) 100vw, 191px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The final nugget is, according to\u00a0biographer A. H.
