{"id":984,"date":"2012-10-24T13:23:36","date_gmt":"2012-10-24T13:23:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/?p=984"},"modified":"2012-10-24T13:23:36","modified_gmt":"2012-10-24T13:23:36","slug":"manuscript-translation-of-a-french-serjeants-memoir","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/2012\/10\/24\/manuscript-translation-of-a-french-serjeants-memoir\/","title":{"rendered":"Manuscript translation of a French serjeant&#8217;s memoir"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2012\/10\/Guillemard1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-985\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2012\/10\/Guillemard1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2012\/10\/Guillemard1-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2012\/10\/Guillemard1-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Recently acquired at auction!<\/p>\n<p>Charles Og\u00e9 Barbaroux (1792\u20131867), the son of Charles Jean-Marie Barbaroux (1767\u20131794, who was guillotined during the Terror) first published his <em>M\u00e9moires <\/em>in 1822.\u00a0 A few years later, Joseph Alexandre Lardier (b. 1796) translated them into English as <em>Adventures of a French Serjeant: during his campaigns in Italy, Spain, Germany, Russia, &amp;c., from 1805 to 1823<\/em> (London, 1826), for some reason attributing the memoirs to a Robert Guillemard.<\/p>\n<p>We already had the first French edition of Barbaroux\u2019s memoir (1822).\u00a0 With the support of the Don Engley Book Fund, we recently purchased this manuscript at auction of over 400 pages, which appears to be a fair copy of Lardier\u2019s translation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2012\/10\/Barbaroux-tp.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-986\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2012\/10\/Barbaroux-tp-164x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"164\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2012\/10\/Barbaroux-tp-164x300.jpg 164w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2012\/10\/Barbaroux-tp-559x1024.jpg 559w, http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2012\/10\/Barbaroux-tp.jpg 1100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 164px) 100vw, 164px\" \/><\/a>To complete our holdings, we also recently acquired the first London edition of this translation (from a dealer in California).\u00a0 Even a cursory reading reveals many differences in the text, and we feel that this is a superb senior thesis topic for some enterprising student, or a possible article topic \u00a0for a faculty member.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently acquired at auction!
