{"id":1715,"date":"2013-10-20T14:58:50","date_gmt":"2013-10-20T18:58:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/colorandmoney\/?p=1715"},"modified":"2013-10-20T16:02:23","modified_gmt":"2013-10-20T20:02:23","slug":"exercise-e-brian-allen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/colorandmoney\/2013\/10\/20\/exercise-e-brian-allen\/","title":{"rendered":"Exercise E: Brian Allen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Having arrived from an integrated high school in a black neighborhood, Brian Allen\u00a0is startled to find that he is one of few Black students on his university campus.\u00a0 Despite having had many White friends in high school, the discomfort he feels as a minority in college, which he expresses in the 1986 documentary <em>Skin Deep<\/em>,\u00a0leads him to surround himself with people of his own race with whom he feels understood.\u00a0 Brian explains, \u201cComing to a school where there\u2019s not a lot of other minorities, we sort of had to pull together\u201d (<i>Skin Deep<\/i>, 18:26).<\/p>\n<p>Initially, it is clear that Brian Allen is in the <i>immersion\/emersion <\/i>phase of racial identity development. \u00a0It is a phase Beverly Daniel Tatum describes in her book, <i>Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?<\/i>, as a period characterized by a, \u201cstrong desire to surround oneself with symbols of one\u2019s racial identity, and actively seek out\u2026 the support of same-race peers\u201d (Tatum, page 76).\u00a0 Brian presents himself as a young man who, after having encountered both overt and covert racism, feels the need to surround himself with people who share his experiences and can provide him the support he needs as he continues to explore his racial identity.<\/p>\n<p>However, by the end of the documentar<span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: #333333;font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;font-size: 12px;line-height: 18px\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 16px;color: #444444;font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif;line-height: 24px\">y<\/span><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: #333333;font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;font-size: 12px;line-height: 18px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1722 alignright\" style=\"color: #444444;font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif;line-height: 1.5;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;cursor: default;height: auto;border-width: 0px;margin: 0px\" alt=\"&quot;You have to Interact, 365 days a year...&quot;\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/colorandmoney\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/63\/files\/2013\/10\/Screen-shot-2013-10-20-at-2.52.32-PM-300x202.png\" width=\"270\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/colorandmoney\/files\/2013\/10\/Screen-shot-2013-10-20-at-2.52.32-PM-300x202.png 300w, https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/colorandmoney\/files\/2013\/10\/Screen-shot-2013-10-20-at-2.52.32-PM-600x405.png 600w, https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/colorandmoney\/files\/2013\/10\/Screen-shot-2013-10-20-at-2.52.32-PM.png 1021w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 16px;color: #444444;font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif;line-height: 24px\">\u00a0Brian is clearly entering the <i>internalization <\/i>phase, described by Tatum as a sense of security about one\u2019s racial identity, or a willingness to transcend racial lines and commit to the concerns of one\u2019s racial group (Tatum, 76). \u00a0Brian\u2019s participation in the documentary itself is a testament to his desire to transcend racial boundaries, and he tells the group on the final night that to combat racism, \u201cyou have to interact [with other races]\u2026 wake up with the idea that, yo, this has got to end\u2026 and don\u2019t believe in the stereotypes\u201d (<i>Skin Deep<\/i>, 48:30).\u00a0Brian is a fascinating example of youth navigating and developing racial identity. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Works Cited<\/p>\n<p><i>Skin Deep<\/i>.
