{"id":1754,"date":"2013-10-20T16:40:56","date_gmt":"2013-10-20T20:40:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/colorandmoney\/?p=1754"},"modified":"2013-10-20T16:41:18","modified_gmt":"2013-10-20T20:41:18","slug":"is-he-comfortable-in-his-own-skin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/colorandmoney\/2013\/10\/20\/is-he-comfortable-in-his-own-skin\/","title":{"rendered":"Is He Comfortable in His Own Skin?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Is He Comfortable in His Own Skin?<\/p>\n<p>The ability to not only accept the history of ones race, but also take on the obligation to paint the view of one\u2019s race in a positive light, is extremely complicated for a minority student in America; especially a Black one.<\/p>\n<p>Gordon, a student at the University of California-Berkley, is one example of a student immersed in a stage of racial identification defined in Beverly Tatum\u2019s work <i>Why Are All The Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Gordon begins his place in the film <i>Skin Deep <\/i>with: \u201cAll they want to see is that they admit \u201cX\u201d amount of Blacks, Latinos, so on and so forth. After that they don\u2019t care about you\u2026 There are no support groups,\u201d (16:20). He\u2019s at a stage where the struggle of being a black human being is real. However, despite this, he is determined to beat the odds, not only for himself, but in order to make known the struggle to the world.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1755\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1755\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/colorandmoney\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/63\/files\/2013\/10\/Capture1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1755\" alt=\"Gordon at Graduation \" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/colorandmoney\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/63\/files\/2013\/10\/Capture1-300x230.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/colorandmoney\/files\/2013\/10\/Capture1-300x230.png 300w, https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/colorandmoney\/files\/2013\/10\/Capture1-600x460.png 600w, https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/colorandmoney\/files\/2013\/10\/Capture1.png 622w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1755\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gordon at Graduation<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The transformation Gordon made, even just during the film proves that he belongs in the fourth stage because he has expressed the will to \u201cestablish meaningful relationships across group boundaries with others, including Whites, who are respectful of this new self-definition,\u201d (Tatum 76). Gordon hasn\u2019t quite made it to the fifth stage because it doesn\u2019t seem like he\u2019s \u201cfound ways to translate a personal sense of racial identity into ongoing action expressing a sense of commitment to the concerns of Blacks as a group,\u201d (Tatum 76).<\/p>\n<p>During the discussions one point that was made repeatedly was that students couldn\u2019t make up for what their ancestors did. Though justified, Gordon changes the view and sets the stage for the opening up of raw feelings when he says, \u201cThings are happening now.
