Appearance/Behavior: This small (22 – 29 cm) squirrel is reddish brown with distinctive dark brown and white striping (blue arrow), running from its head to its rear. Its relatively long tail is dark gray (red arrow).
Relative Frequency of Visitation in Study: Very rare at compost piles (only a single encounter), although quite common at study site in general, particularly in vicinity of stonewalls.
Seasonal Activity: The sole image is from mid-June, although the chipmunk is potentially active from spring through early fall.
Daily Activity: Diurnal.
Similar Species: The chipmunk loosely resembles the gray squirrel, but is much smaller, striped, and lacks an extremely bushy tail.
