The one documented encounter at the compost piles involved a single female.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Relative Frequency of Visitation in Study<\/strong>: A rare visitor, with just several encounters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Seasonal Activity<\/strong>: Potentially year-round.\u00a0 Visitation documented in winter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Daily Activity<\/strong>:\u00a0 Strictly <a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/compostvisitation\/glossary\/\" target=\"_blank\">diurnal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Similar Species<\/strong>:\u00a0 The red-bellied woodpecker\u2019s red coloration on the head and extensive black-and-white barring along the back distinguish it from other birds seen at the compost piles.\u00a0 The only other woodpecker observed directly at the piles is the smaller <a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/compostvisitation\/birds\/downy-woodpecker-picoides-pubescens\/\">downy woodpecker<\/a>, which has a black and white facial markings and a central white patch on its back.\u00a0 Both these plumage features are lacking in the red-bellied.\u00a0 The <a title=\"Pileated Woodpecker  (Dryocopus pileatus)\" href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/compostvisitation\/birds\/pileated-woodpecker-dryocopus-pileatus\/\">pileated woodpecker<\/a>, much larger and darker that the red-bellied, has been documented in the vicinity of the piles, but not directly on them.\u00a0 Other woodpecker species which are similar to the red-bellied and occur at the study site, but which have not been encountered at the piles, include the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/guide\/Northern_Flicker\/id\">northern flicker<\/a> (<em>Colaptes auratus<\/em>), the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/guide\/hairy_woodpecker\/id\">hairy woodpecker<\/a> (<em>Picoides villosus<\/em>), and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/guide\/Yellow-bellied_Sapsucker\/id\">yellow-bellied sapsucker<\/a> (<em>Sphyrapicus vairus<\/em>). \u00a0Neither of the first two species has as much red on the head or the substantial black-and-white barring on the back seen in the red-bellied woodpecker.\u00a0 The sapsucker lacks red plumage on the <a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/compostvisitation\/glossary\/\" target=\"_blank\">nape<\/a> and has a distinctive broad, white stripe running along the wings front edge.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Well-defined Image: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a
