{"id":10733,"date":"2013-11-10T20:19:30","date_gmt":"2013-11-11T01:19:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/cssp\/?p=10733"},"modified":"2013-11-10T20:19:30","modified_gmt":"2013-11-11T01:19:30","slug":"exercise-8-one-nation-indivisible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/cssp\/2013\/11\/10\/exercise-8-one-nation-indivisible\/","title":{"rendered":"Exercise 8 One Nation Indivisible"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cities, Suburbs, Schools<\/p>\n<p>11\/9\/13<\/p>\n<p>Last Friday, November 8, I was able to attend a conference titled Where Integration Meets Innovation.\u00a0 This conference was held at the Hartford Public Library and its main purpose was to aid in the Sheff Movement Coalition.\u00a0 The conference had a very reputable panel with representatives such as Martha Stone, Dennis Parker, Amy Wells, Alex Knopp, Robert Cotto, and Elizabeth Horton Sheff herself.<\/p>\n<p>At first I was not sure how the conference would work.\u00a0 I was very nervous that I would be asked questions and I had never been to anything quite like it.\u00a0 The group of students who attended decided to split the conference up into sections by speakers.\u00a0 I chose to represent Martha Stone.\u00a0Martha Stone is the lead attorney for the Plantiffs in the Sheff vs. O\u2019Neill court case.\u00a0 We have been studying this case for some time in class and it was truly an experience to see the actual brains behind the ideas.\u00a0 Stone began her panel discussion by opening with two dates. \u00a0She said \u201cApril 27, 1989 and July 9, 1996\u201d.\u00a0 She proceeded to speak about how the lawsuit began twenty-four years ago and the decision was seventeen years ago.\u00a0 She said they always begin each topic with Langston Hughes\u2019s differed dream quote.\u00a0 \u201cWhat happens to a dream deferred? \u2028Does it dry up \u2028like a raisin in the sun? \u2028Or fester like a sore&#8211; \u2028And then run? \u2028Does it stink like rotten meat? \u2028Or crust and sugar over&#8211; \u2028like a syrupy sweet? \u2028Maybe it just sags \u2028like a heavy load.\u2028\u2028Or does it explode?\u201d\u00a0 This quote was meant to show everyone that everybody deserves an equal chance at dreaming.\u00a0 She then spoke about how in 1987 civil rights advocates approached her and how this was before Elizabeth Horton Sheff was even involved.\u00a0 At first Hartford made it very clear that they did not want this lawsuit in any way shape or form.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10734\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10734\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/cssp\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/68\/files\/2013\/11\/IMG_6475.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10734\" alt=\"Cover of Conference Agenda Credit: Christina Raiti 11\/8\/13\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/cssp\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/68\/files\/2013\/11\/IMG_6475-225x300.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/cssp\/files\/2013\/11\/IMG_6475-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/cssp\/files\/2013\/11\/IMG_6475-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10734\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cover of Conference Agenda Credit: Christina Raiti 11\/8\/13<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Stone started to explain the exact reasoning for the lawsuit.\u00a0 She said in 1987 and 1989 mastery tests were administered.\u00a0 Hartford kids scored significantly lower than other Connecticut kids. \u00a0This was the first time that the difference in educational quality became very clear.\u00a0 Over seventy-five percent of the children in Hartford needed extra help with basic reading.\u00a0 This was a number Stone felt was absurd.<\/p>\n<p>Finally Stone ended with a saying that I really thought was powerful.\u00a0 She asked if the glass was half empty or if the glass was half full.\u00a0 She said the answer was yes.\u00a0 Stone followed by saying until the glass is all-full the law suit will continue.\u00a0 There is no equal education in isolation.\u00a0 This conference provided the community with a lot of information both facts based and hopeful wishes.\u00a0 Sheff and Stone intend to make it equal for all kids to achieve their dreams.
