For years, we have used federal census, state agency, and local government records to answer research questions.\u00a0But open data makes our work easier and more accessible, for several reasons:<\/p>\n<p>1) Open data is findable and exportable in many formats, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/data.ct.gov\/Education\/Education-Directory\/9k2y-kqxn\">CT Education Directory<\/a>, which enabled my students to create this <a href=\"https:\/\/data.ct.gov\/Education\/CT-Schools-Map\/shww-dhc6\">basic school map<\/a>, and to <a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/dataviz\/2015\/03\/13\/ct-voices\/\">overlay school and town-level map data<\/a>\u00a0with a non-profit organization.<\/p>\n<p>2) Open data providers can aggregate (or group) records in multiple ways, while protecting individual confidentiality, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/data.hartford.gov\/nominate?&amp;page=4\">this data request<\/a>, which led to our map of <a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/dataviz\/2014\/07\/31\/hps-neighborhood\/\">Hartford students by neighborhood residence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>3) Open data allows us to more easily build useful tools for the public, such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctoca.org\/mobility_app\">Mobility App<\/a> created by students with the Open Communities Alliance.<\/p>\n<p>4) With open data, we also can build tools from live data feeds, such as this\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/jackdougherty.github.io\/transit\/\">CTfastrak bus location site<\/a>\u00a0(beta version; <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/JackDougherty\/transit\">learn how it works<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Remember: Technology is the easy part of open data.
