In Educ 300: Education Reform, Past & Present<\/em>, the major writing assignment is a research essay that addresses change and\/or continuity over time<\/strong> regarding any topic in education. By design, the boundaries are very broad. You may explore any topic<\/strong><\/em> related to education, at any level inside the schooling system<\/strong> <\/em>(early childhood, elementary & secondary, or higher education) or outside the system<\/strong><\/em> (home schooling, community-based education, etc.), in any location<\/strong><\/em> (local, domestic, or international) or time period<\/strong><\/em> (centuries ago or recent events), as long as you frame the question around change and\/or continuity over time.<\/p>\n

Appropriate types of research questions that address change and\/or continuity over time:<\/p>\n

  1. historical origins —\u00a0How did X first arise at this period in time?<\/em><\/li>\n
  2. historical causation\u00a0—\u00a0What factors caused X to happen over time?<\/em><\/li>\n
  3. multiple definitions \u00a0— \u00a0How did different reformers envision X over time?<\/em><\/li>\n
  4. social history of human experiences —\u00a0How did group Y experience X over time?<\/em><\/li>\n
  5. historiographical —\u00a0How have different historians interpreted X over time?<\/em><\/li>\n
  6. policy formation — \u00a0How did X arise as a policy issue over a specific period?<\/em><\/li>\n
  7. policy implementation\u00a0—\u00a0How was X transformed from policy into practice?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Types of questions that are NOT appropriate for an Educ 300 paper:<\/p>\n
