Do-It Day is <\/span>a longstanding Trinity tradition of giving back to Hartford \u2013 many students and faculty spent this past Saturday doing community service at various jobsites all around the capital city. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Anyone can register for Do-It Day, either as an individual or a group. I\u2019m on the softball team<\/a> at Trinity, and we always volunteer together. This year we helped out at a local restaurant called <\/span>Fire by Forge<\/span><\/a> \u2013 the same place we were at last year, by coincidence.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We <\/span>started the day by <\/span>check<\/span>ing<\/span> in <\/span>at the <\/span>Office of Community Service and Civic Engagement <\/span><\/a>in downstairs Mather<\/span> and <\/span>g<\/span>e<\/span>t<\/span>ting<\/span> our Do<\/span>-I<\/span>t <\/span>Day t<\/span>–<\/span>shirts (which <\/span>looked <\/span>SO <\/span>good this year<\/span>)<\/span>.<\/span> We<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>then set off on our 5-minute drive.<\/span> Once we got <\/span>to the <\/span>restaurant, <\/span>w<\/span>e <\/span>were greeted by a woman named <\/span>Beck<\/span>y<\/span>. She<\/span> gave us gloves and gardening tools<\/span> and <\/span>showed <\/span>us the ropes of <\/span>what we would be doing<\/span> \u2013 <\/span>m<\/span>ainly weeding<\/span> and planting flowers, <\/span>generally<\/span> sprucing<\/span> up the outdoor look of the restaur<\/span>ant.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After working for about an hour<\/span>,<\/span> someone stopped us \u2013 <\/span>Keith McGilvery<\/span>,<\/span> a<\/span> news anchor from <\/span><\/span>Fox 61<\/span><\/span><\/a> (a<\/span> Connecticut morning news show<\/span>)<\/span>,<\/span> who just happened to see us on <\/span>his walk home. <\/span>We talked for a while, and he posted us on <\/span>his <\/span>Instagram<\/span> and <\/span><\/span>Twitter<\/span><\/span><\/a> after telling <\/span>us he would air a story about us <\/span>next week<\/span>!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We kept at it for a little while longer and filled up many bags with all of the unwanted foliage. Some of my teammates planted flowers near the front of the restaurant too. After we were all finished, Becky gave us plenty of water and offered us bags of chips and Fire by Forge\u2019s Hartford-renowned chocolate chip cookies (which even surpassed what I\u2019ve heard about them). She also gave us a tour of the inside of the place, which was super impressive to all of the returners, considering that at last year\u2019s Do-It Day we helped move furniture out of the restaurant while it was in a state of construction. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Before leaving, we voted on our team \u201cDo-It Day MVP\u201d … first year Bella Calagna came out on top with her green thumb, helping us distinguish weeds from other plants that we were not supposed to rip out of the ground!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All in all<\/span>,<\/span> it was an awesome day of <\/span>giving back to the community and team bonding before our fall season really kicks off.<\/span> I look forward to Do<\/span>–<\/span>It <\/span>Day every year and <\/span>can\u2019t<\/span> wait to see <\/span>where <\/span>we\u2019re<\/span> assigned next fall!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
