It was first settled in 1641 and has a population estimated to be around 18,269. Madison is considered one of the wealthier towns in Connecticut and in the New Haven County with an average income estimated to be $104,943. In comparison, the average income across Connecticut is estimated to be $67,098. Due to the income disparities between a town like Madison and other cities in Connecticut, one would assume the structure and branding of the stores is very different. The stores in Madison along the Main Street are quaint and maintain the original buildings and feel of the historic town. In order to maintain historic value and to prevent the extreme urbanization and tourism of the town, Madison does not allow commercial or chain stores on its Main Street.

The store I visited over Thanksgiving break, Ciao Bella, is a small clothing boutique for young women. I have grown up shopping at this boutique, and it is safe to say that it is the most popular clothing store among the young women in Madison. This store sells dresses, sweaters, skirts, shirts, and accessories for women at fairly reasonable prices. However, this store is no T.J Maxx or Marshalls. I have witnessed high school aged girls with their mothers spend upwards of three hundred dollars on only a few articles of the latest trending clothing. Through observing the store’s clientele and through my frequent visits over the years, I can confidently state that the main customers are high school and college aged white women. Madison, CT is about 94% white. The store’s target customers are definitely young, wealthy, white females. Due to the average income of the town, the stores attend to higher end buyers because customers are more willing to pay higher prices. Therefore, it can be easily concluded that a town’s income significantly affects what stores are and will stay in town. Because Madison is a fairly wealthy beach town that attracts many tourists and income, it houses many high end, expensive stores that match the demographics of the town.

Kendra Lena ’17

Madison, Connecticut is a small, suburban beach town exactly one hour

[3
