Team B reading questions. Responses of 250-300 words are due by 9PM on Monday 10/6 as an original post. Don’t forget a creative title for your post.
1. When Robert Audley and George Talboys steal into Lady Audley’s room, they find her portrait, which the narrator tells us was painted by someone from the “pre-Raphaelite brotherhood” (Braddon 64). Do a google image search for “pre-Raphaelite”—how would you describe these paintings? What do they have in common? What scenes and objects do they tend to depict? Why do you think the portrait of Lady Audley is said to be in this style? Upload an image of a painting that strikes you as representative of the pre-Raphaelites.
2. Compare Robert Audley’s relationships with Lady Audley and George Talboys. What is the basis for each? What does each relationship tell us about Robert’s character? What kind of language does the narrator use to describe his relationship with each? Provide quotations and page numbers.
3. This novel is full of cliff-hangers, and these cliff-hangers would have been much more apparent in the novel’s original serial form. Analyze how the cliff-hanger between chapters 3-4 functions (Braddon 32). What information must the audience already know in order to care about this cliff-hanger? What information must be withheld in order to develop intrigue?
