Manipulative and Deceitful

Throughout the entire novel, the reader catches a couple glimpses that Lady Audley’s perfect façade masks her real personality. One of the first instances where I completely lost my sympathy for Lady Audley begins when Robert Audley confronts her and threatens that he will uncover the truth about her double identity. Lady Audley believes she can complain to Sir Michael that Robert is crazy and he will believe her no matter what, “But he’ll never believe you,’ said Miss Audley; ‘he will laugh at such an idea.’ ‘No, Alicia; he will believe anything that I tell him,’ answered my lady, with a quiet smile” (238). She uses her façade to manipulate other people into believing anything she says and for recruiting people to her side. She knows that she is beautiful and can convince a man to do what she wants with just her looks, “Miss Lucy Graham was blessed with that magic power of fascination by which a woman can charm with a word or intoxicate with a smile” (11). Lady Audley’s “quiet smile” seems to be an underlying threat showing that she will do whatever it takes to convince Sir Michael that she has done no wrong and that Robert Audley is mad to accuse her. She is a mischievous woman who uses her beauty and power to deceive people. She intends to lie to her husband and cover up the truth. I lose my sympathy for Lady Audley at this sentence because it shows that she is deceitful and manipulative.
