He talks about the nature of beauty and how there is a sensus communis or a “common sense” within beauty. This theory of “common sense” is puzzling to people of that time, making it hard to relate to his obscure thinking. However, Kant also makes relevant remarks pointing out that “when we think something’s great, we want everyone else to think it’s great too.” (Wilson 82) If you like something, Kant believes you must of had to experience it first.

Bourdieu relates taste to social status and how each different class correlates to ones own interests. With different social classes representing different tastes, Bourdieu’s research led him to believe that working class people enjoyed more basic interests and as each social class increases so did their tastes. Moving up from the lower classes to superior status, people were more able to identify their tastes and distastes, “Taste is a means of distinguishing ourselves from others, the pursuit of distinction. (Wilson 89)” Bourdieu ties the different social classes and tastes together to establish a symbolic power that each person has regarding their different standings.

Kant and Bourdieu both have theories that connect with our own beliefs. The idea that someone wants to share their tastes with other people is very common in society while Bourdieu’s belief that different classes correspond to different tastes is true because the different classes are going to have different experiences that set them apart.

David Hume describes what he sees as a tasteful person in terms of, “strong sense, united to delicate sentiment, improved by practice, perfected by comparison and cleared of all prejudice.” (Wilson 80) Hume correlates his ideas with a class that is so elite those specific…

[1
