Yampbell makes it clear that if a teen isn’t attracted to the cover of the book, most of the time, they won’t even take it off the shelf and “will disappear among the hundreds that will annually go out of print” (347). I’m sure that most young adults will tell you that if they see a book with a very unappealing cover, they will automatically stay away from it because thats the way we are now. Nowadays, authors tend to include “holograms, digital art, and metallic jackets” (347) in their covers to make them more “abstract, sensational, unusual and eye-catching” (347), all to attract the teen audience to their novels. One of the things that made the novel “The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green so successful was its very unique cover. The cover of the book has a blue background with two clouds (one black and one white), each filled in with writing in chalk. It was a very eye-catching cover and that is part of the reason why most of our class was attracted to and engaged with the book. Personally, the first book we read never really drew me in, especially from the start, and part of that reason was the cover never appealed to me. The cover of TFIOS was so much more appealing to the young adult audience and even though the book was meant to be sad and depressing at times, it was a much more enjoyable read.

Yampbell, Cat. “Judging a Book by Its Cover: Publishing Trends in Young Adult Literature.” Muse.jhu.edu.
