The first paragraph introduces Audley Court as a pleasant and pretty place, not intimidating like one would expect an old, wealthy estate to be. The diction that is used in the first sentence to describe the hollow in which the Court is located&#8211;&#8220;rich,&#8221; &#8220;fine old,&#8221; &#8220;luxuriant&#8211;tells us that the Court is associated with old wealth and luxury. \u00a0The &#8220;high hedges&#8221; mean that the Court is an exclusive place, and the reader can insinuate that the hedges were probably planted there to prevent people from seeing onto the property and to keep up the air of exclusivity. However, t<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">he fact that there are cows grazing in the meadows surrounding the Court adds a quality of commonness to it, perhaps foreshadowing that while the people who live in the Court are wealthy, they aren&#8217;t snobbish or overly concerned with presenting a perfect outward appearance to visitors.\u00a0The novel describes these cows in the meadows leading towards the Court as looking &#8220;inquisitively&#8221; at people who pass by the meadow on the road to the Court which is an interesting diction choice; by looking &#8220;inquisitively,&#8221; they become\u00a0<\/span>characters,\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">not just cows, and are made akin to the high class people who live in the Court who would also\u00a0<\/span>inquisitively<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">\u00a0look upon visitors to the Court as they approached.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first paragraph of Lady Audley&#8217;s Secret sets up the novel as one that deals with the power of wealth.
