Free associate the word “melodrama.” What other words pop into your mind? Now look up “melodrama” in the Merriam-Webster dictionary online. How does this definition compare with your pre-conceived notions of the term? What is the most melodramatic aspect of Lady Audley’s Secret, according to the definition? Can you think of any modern-day melodramas?

3. Do a google image search for “Lady Audley’s Secret” and you’ll find a bunch of book covers.
