Overall, the two covers are completely different. The book cover is far more mysterious and inconclusive whereas the movie cover reveals more about the story.

A notable difference between the two covers is the image of Lady Audley herself. The book cover reveals very little about her; only her head is shown and she is turned away from the reader and looking down. How old is she? Is she beautiful? The reader knows she has a secret, but the nature of it is nebulous. The movie cover displays most of her body, including her face, through the reflection of a mirror. Although pretty, her raised eyebrows and sharp jawline suggest a sinister quality to her character.

The book cover shows only Lady Audley; the reader doesn’t learn anything about other characters. The movie cover foreshadows plot information by presenting others. There is a man’s reflection in the mirror looking suspiciously at Lady Audley, as she glances back at him. The viewer can predict a conflict between these two characters. A handsome man also appears in the mirror looking blank and distant. His image is slightly translucent as if he isn’t actually standing in front of the mirror like the other two characters, emphasizing the mystery in the story. In the corner of the cover, there’s a scene from the movie showing an older man comforting Lady Audley. The man looks worried and Lady Audley has a distraught expression on her face. This foreshadows a vulnerable side to her character.

The two covers could appeal to different types of consumers. Some people like go into a story blind while others need to know the gist of what may happen. Clearly, the movie cover would attract the ladder group – the phrase, “Dark Secrets, Deception, and Murder” appears on it. Often before watching a movie, information is given to the viewer. With books, the story unfolds as it is read.

I chose to juxtapose our Oxford edition cover of LAS with the movie adaptation cover.
