The novel is not “escapist” as a whole, as Cannie grapples with her weight and heavier life issues, but retains a lighter tone that distracts the reader and herself from these issues. As a narrator, Cannie utilizes sarcasm when discussing her weight. In her first meeting with Dr. K, she describes herself as, “the only one who got hit with the fat stick” (40). The image of a “fat stick” gives the passage a humorous tone. What is underlying; however, is Cannie’s low self-esteem and despair shown several pages later. “I’m miserable, I’m lonely. Nobody’s going to date me looking like this,” (44). Miserable and lonely stick out real emotions that Cannie, and overweight readers may feel. She continues, “I’m going to die alone, and my dog’s going to eat my face, and no one will find us until the smell seeps out under the door” (44). Cannie quickly turns her miserable outburst into somewhat of a comedy. The absurdity of her story distracts the reader from the more serious statement made previously. Breaking this passage into two illustrates the way Cannie both acknowledges her problems, and then deals with them through humor.

I would describe The Fault In Our Stars as a heavier novel, while still retaining “escapist” qualities to dilute the tragic topic of children with cancer. Hazel and Gus’s diseases are very real, and very horrible. Their romance; however, is something of a fairy tale. Bottom line, its not realistic, and thus serves as an escape from both the reader’s and characters’ perspectives.

Jennifer Weiner’s Good in Bed both comments on real life struggles of the main character, Cannie, while ultimately providing a pleasant escape to readers.
