From pages 3-7, Cannie uses descriptive language to describe her immediate feeling after realizing she had been described as overweight to the general public. Not only was she humiliated, but she was betrayed that her ex would write something so mean about her. This specific story that Cannie tells is positioned at the beginning of the narrative to show how deeply affected Cannie was by the situation and how in the rest of the story revolves around this particular issue. When Cannie describes this experience, you can get a feel for her sensitive, yet humorous personality. Despite being devastated about her ex’s lack of loyalty towards her, she is able to make light of the negative situation with her sense of humor. After reading her ex’s article she states, “Then I felt [my heart] start to pound again, in my wrists, my throat, my fingertips. The hair at the back of my neck stood up. My hands felt icy. I could hear the blood roaring in my ears, as I read the first line of the article: “I’ll never forget the day I found out my girlfriend weighed more than I did” (p 4). This illustrative quote shows that she has feelings and reacts realistically as any normal person would in this type of a situation. After somewhat collecting herself she jokingly asks her coworkers, “Does anybody know anything about getting a gun in this state…You know what? I’m not going to kill him. Death’s too good for him” (p 7). After reading this we know that Cannie copes with some of her problems through comic relief. We immediately feel sympathetic towards Cannie when she explains her stories and sad feelings with such vivid detail because we can almost feel what she is feeling. I am sure that if the story were in Bruce’s perspective, we would be more sympathetic towards him. Cannie’s sensitive, yet humorous nature when telling stories makes her pretty easy to relate to (at least for me) and makes me want to keep reading more.

At the very beginning of the novel, Cannie describes the moment she read her boyfriend’s article about her in the news.
