Two hard copies must be submitted to Gigi St. Peter in Seabury 127 by Monday, April 9, 2018, or sooner.<\/p>\n<p><strong>D.G.BRINTON THOMPSON PRIZE IN AMERICAN HISTORY &#8211; $500 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Open to all classes. Awarded to a thesis considered by the Department to be an excellent one in the field of American history<\/p>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\"><strong>MILES A.TUTTLE PRIZE &#8211; $700<\/strong><br \/>\nCompetition for this prize is open to members of the <em>senior class only<\/em>. Awarded to a thesis judged to be best in any field of History.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\"><strong>GEORGE B.COOPER PRIZE IN BRITISH HISTORY &#8211; $300<\/strong><br \/>\nAwarded to the senior who has done the best work in British history at Trinity. The prize was established in 1976 by D.G.Brinton Thompson, Charles H. Northam Professor emeritus and a former Chairman of the History Department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\"><strong>FERGUSON PRIZE IN HISTORY &#8211; First Prize, $500; Second Prize, $450<\/strong><br \/>\nCompetition for this prize is open to history majors who are members of the <em>senior class only<\/em>.\u00a0 Awarded to the best portfolio of essays. Portfolios must include three essays and a one-page cover letter. The cover letter should introduce the essays and explain how they exemplify the department&#8217;s <em>learning goals<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\"><strong>GEORGE J.MEAD PRIZE IN HISTORY &#8211; $250<\/strong><br \/>\nAwarded to an outstanding history major in the freshman or sophomore class.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\"><strong>GEORGE J. MEAD PRIZE IN HISTORY FOR SCHOLARSHIP IN NON-ENGLISH SOURCES &#8211; $150<\/strong><br \/>\nAwarded to a thesis or 15-page minimum paper based in part on sources in a language other than English.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\"><strong>GERALD A. MCNAMARA PRIZE IN HISTORY &#8211; $250<\/strong><br \/>\nEstablished in 2013 by his wife, Ronnie, and daughter, Annie, in loving memory of Gerry McNamara &#8217;62, who believed strongly in lifelong learning and the importance of active and vibrant scholarly debate. \u00a0The McNamara Prize will be awarded to the student who, like Gerry, enlivened the classroom with vigorous intellectual engagement and, last but not least, robust class participation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u200bThe Department of History announces the following prizes for essays by history majors judged by the Department to be of distinguished quality.
