In the spring of 2013 I took a course with Professor Stephan Valocchi that changed the way I view myself and others within America’s socio-economic structure. The course, “Social Class and Mobility,” helped me to understand differences in class ideology and how other factors like race, gender, and sexuality impacts socio-economic status and identity. Coming from a working class immigrant family of color, much of what I learned in this course about generational class reproduction was discouraging. However, what I learned about the role of child rearing practices and social mobility was incredibly useful to me as a parent. Below, read a paper I wrote on opportunity structures and life chances.
