Jonathan Gonzalez ’12, an award-winning, New York-based choreographer whose work has appeared on stages in the United States and Europe, returned to Trinity as a guest choreographer and performer in Fall Dance (November 20-22), in which he presented a solo. He also took time out to lead a dance workshop for students.

“Jonathan is very generous. It was his suggestion to stay after his solo performance and personally work with students,” Professor Leslie Farlow of the Theater and Dance Department, with whom Gonzalez studied at Trinity, said. “He is a wonderful role model and everything you want an artist to be.”

Trinity students enrolled in Film 309 at Trinity created a documentary entitled “Coaching Colburn: Finding Love and Laughter in the Face of Autism.” The story centers around a Trinity student’s cousin, who suffers from a developmental disorder called Fragile X. The film was directed by Jeff Bemiss (pictured center), who taught the course, and produced by the 11 students in the class. The film screened at the Trinity Film Festival in May and at the Newburyport Documentary Film Festival this past weekend. Click here for more.

In 1975, Dr. James Bradley, Professor of Classics Emeritus at Trinity College, started the Chamber Music Series to complement the Carillon Music Series that Trinity has offered since 1949. The Trinity Summer Music Series has since become a summertime favorite for Hartford residents and the Trinity community, as groups gather on campus for classical music performances in the Chapel before picnicking beneath the bells on the scenic Long Walk Quad after the recitals. Last night, forty years after the first chamber recital, Bradley was back to see the Chamber Series still pleasing so many concert goers. Joining Bradley was Peter Shea (tenor), and Susan Zimmerman Lowenkron (flute), who were each members of the inaugural performance back in 1975. Pictured above, the three stand alongside Robert Edward Smith (right), Composer-in-Residence at Trinity College. Click here for a full set of photos from the special night. Click here for more on the Trinity Summer Music Series.

Baby Brownell was born as part of an arts project at Trinity, created by Mark Yanagisawa ’14. Students studying sculpture with Associate Professor of Fine Arts Patricia Tillman were asked to create a site specific work on campus. Yanagisawa, a mechanical engineering major and architectural studies minor, created this as a juxtaposition to the iconic Bishop Brownell statue on the Long Walk Quad to “free some of the seriousness of the bishop,” and to make it more accessible to students. Next year, Yanagisawa will be in Chester, Penn., working as a mechanical engineer for Kimberly Clark Corporation.

Above: Jennifer Lee, an eighth grader at the Two Rivers Middle Magnet school in East Hartford, presents her research on birds at Trinity’s Annual Science Symposium Poster Presentations. Jennifer was selected to present her work along with Trinity students, having been chosen for her standout research analyzing 10 years of bird banding data from Dr. Morrison’s field site at Two Rivers. Jennifer worked with Dr. Joan Morrison (pictured), Professor of Biology at Trinity, and a long-time ornithologist. Jennifer was most surprised to learn from her research that the diversity of birds in the urban Hartford area is quite high and not dominated by any one species, and that birds’ food of choice during the nesting season is, overwhelmingly, insects.

Morrison works with area students throughout the year on tagging birds and researching their behaviors and distributions. In addition to studying birds in Connecticut, Morrison has returned repeatedly to the MacArthur Ago-ecology Research Center in south-central Florida for over 20 years to continue her studies of the Crested Caracara, a unique falcon found year-round on Florida’s ranchlands and remnant prairies. Morrison’s research now uses GPS/GSM transmitters to study the caracara’s movements. Her plan is to use this technology to facilitate the next research phase for this federally- and state-threatened species, to understand breeding pair responses to habitat conversion. Click here for a short video about Professor Morrison’s research on the Crested Caracara.

From left, Xiangming Chen, dean and director of the Center for Urban and Global Studies (CUGS) and Paul E. Raether Distinguished Professor of Global Urban Studies and Sociology, and Nick Bacon ’10, PhD student in Urban Anthropology at the City University of New York and CUGS research associate, autograph copies of the book they co-edited, Confronting Urban Legacy, after a recent presentation at the Mark Twain Museum Center. The book explores the transformative relationship between globalization and urban transition in Hartford while including comparative chapters on other New England cities: Portland, Maine, along with Lawrence and Springfield, Massachusetts. Bacon in particular used his research on East Hartford to demonstrate the importance of studying Hartford locally, regionally, and globally. For more on the book, click here.

Last weekend, Trinity celebrated another stunning theatrical production at the Austin Arts Center. The musical, “Parade,” featured an undergraduate cast of 25 and a professional chamber orchestra, under the direction of Gerald Moshell, professor of music and director of the Musical-Theater Program at Trinity. The choreography was by Julia Strong ’94, and Micah Greene. For video scenes from the production, click here. For photographs, click here.
