									<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://commons.trincoll.edu/dataviz/files/2014/07/Open_Communities_Alliance.png" rel="nofollow ugc"><img loading="lazy" alt="Open_Communities_Alliance" src="http://commons.trincoll.edu/dataviz/files/2014/07/Open_Communities_Alliance-300x56.png" width="300" height="56" /></a>Open Communities Alliance is a new civil rights organization that promotes access to opportunity for all people through education, organizing, advocacy, research, and partnerships. Erin Boggs, executive director of CT OCA, began working on a &#8220;Housing Mobility Map&#8221; with Prof. Jack Dougherty at the Connecticut Inequality Hackathon in spring 2014, and Trinity students continued to assist her in summer 2014. <p>The Housing Mobility Map (based on <a href="http://derekeder.com/searchable_map_template/" rel="nofollow ugc">Derek Eder&#8217;s open-source template</a>) allows families and housing counselors to enter the address of a possible apartment or house, view surrounding neighborhood assets, and evaluate the level of opportunity in that census tract, based on a recent report commissioned by the CT Fair Housing Center. <p><span>For GreatBy8, we created an interactive map that is able to allow users to look up their addresses in West Hartford and find different resources (such as schools, early childhood programs, health programs, and other programs) as well as seeing the </span>demographics<span> in each of their individual census tracts. Within each of the census tracts users are able to see the number of children 0-9, median household incomes, and percentage of adults with a bachelor&#8217;s degree and above. <p>They have two main offices for the STRIVE program in the cities of Hartford and Bridgeport and have certain eligibility areas within each city. Users are able to enter in their address and see if their census area is within the eligibility area for the STRIVE program. <p>Using the Socrata platform for the Connecticut open data portal, I used the visualization and filter tools to create this visualization. The visualization differentiates different schools in Connecticut by charter schools, technical schools, magnet schools, state agencies, regional schools, and district schools. The user is able to visually see the points on the map and be able to differentiate the different types of schools in each parts of the regions in Connecticut.</p>
