{"id":3006,"date":"2016-09-30T15:34:57","date_gmt":"2016-09-30T19:34:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter\/?page_id=3006"},"modified":"2016-09-30T15:34:57","modified_gmt":"2016-09-30T19:34:57","slug":"bringing-music-to-life","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-fall2016\/along-the-walk\/bringing-music-to-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Bringing Music to Life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For Josh Gruss \u201996, the dream of giving back to his alma mater reached a high note with the opening of Trinity College\u2019s Gruss Music Center on May 19.<\/p>\n<p>The facility features a Music Hall with acoustical treatments to accommodate the teaching, rehearsal, and performance of all genres of music. Its electronic music lab, underwritten by an anonymous donor, more than doubles the technology and seating of the previous space. The center also boasts a state-of-the-art recording room and four practice rooms, each with recording capabilities.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QhAcYUb1EuE?wmode=transparent&amp;fs=1&amp;hl=en&amp;modestbranding=1&amp;iv_load_policy=3&amp;showsearch=0&amp;rel=1&amp;theme=dark\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>At the event, Cornie Parsons Thornburgh \u201980, chair of Trinity\u2019s Board of Trustees, thanked Gruss for his support of the project. She also recognized leadership donors Palmer Sloan Harckham \u201982 and Finley Harckham P\u201910, \u201915, \u201916, and Richard Field \u201963, who gifted the front entrance and a practice room, respectively. \u201cWe are here to celebrate a renewed dedication to music education at Trinity, made possible by the leadership and philanthropy of many in attendance,\u201d Thornburgh said. She also recognized Eric Galm, associate professor of music and chair of the Music Department, for \u201chis vision of music education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In her remarks, Trinity President Joanne Berger-Sweeney noted that the new center further establishes the performing arts as an important component of a liberal arts education and that Gruss\u2019s gift helps to ensure that it will be a mainstay of a Trinity education for future musicians, writers, and performers.<\/p>\n<p>Said Gruss, \u201cThis is a momentous day for the Music Department and all the musicians on campus who now have a wonderful place to call their home. Music is the lifeblood of many new experiences. \u2026 It\u2019s universal and connects people around the world, and I\u2019m sure that the center will connect everyone on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gruss started playing guitar at a young age and aspired to have a career in music. He graduated from Trinity with a B.A. in French and Italian and earned an executive M.B.A. from Columbia University and the London Business School. He also attended Berklee College of Music and serves on its Board of Trustees.
